We all know that laser diodes are widely used in daily life, so do you know what to do if laser diodes are damaged? Can the laser diode be repaired by itself?
First, the laser diode is broken. Don't disassemble it in a hurry. It's not a light bulb.
Many people think that the laser diode is just a small light bulb. If it doesn't turn on, just change the core or re-weld the wire.
Actually, it is not. Laser diode is a very precise semiconductor device. Its inner light-emitting layer is only a few microns thick, and its outer surface is encapsulated with a metal substrate, a lens, a heat sink and an electrode layer. Once the inner PN junction is burned through or the mirror surface is polluted, it is basically irreversible damage.
In other words, unlike traditional LEDs or electronic components, it can be "repaired", and the laser diode is broken, which is "scrapped" in most cases.
Second, don't draw a conclusion, first make clear whether it is "fake bad" or "really bad"
Many customers think that the laser diode is broken, but it is actually just an external problem. The following situations are particularly common:
1. Abnormal driving circuit
The constant current drive chip is dead and the current output is zero. Of course, the laser is not bright. Try another driver module, and sometimes it will recover immediately.
2. The polarity is reversed or the foot position is wrong
South Korea's QSI, Japanese, and domestic pin arrangements are all different. If the LD and PD pins are connected backwards once, it is equivalent to the death penalty for the chip.
However, sometimes it is only a welding virtual connection, which can also lead to non-brightness.
3. Start the temperature protection
Some modules have temperature control protection, and the light output will be automatically cut off if the temperature is too high. It can light up again after cooling down.
4. Lens pollution or light path occlusion
Especially in the production environment, there is dust or welding slag attached to the light-emitting surface, which looks like "broken", but in fact, it is just that the light is blocked.
So before judging, it is best to do a few simple tests:
Change to a known normal drive test;
Measure the forward and reverse resistance;
See if there is PD signal;
Check whether the heat sink temperature is abnormal.
Theoretically, as long as you have laser chip-level equipment (micro-welding, vacuum packaging, laser collimator, nitrogen protection chamber), you can certainly repair it.
However, the reality is that this set of equipment has millions of packaging machines alone, and it has to be adjusted by experienced technicians.
For general laboratories, companies or individual users, there is no condition at all.
So, don't panic if it breaks down, first check the drive, wiring and temperature; If it's really broken, replace it with a new one.
Rather than bother to repair, it is better to put the protection and use norms in place. After all, prevention is always more cost-effective than repair.
