Many laboratories in the field of life science require rapid, accurate and reliable measurement methods. This is especially true in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and DNA concentration and purity measurements, which rely on quantitative analysis by absorption spectroscopy. Leading instrument manufacturers in these applications are looking for alternative light sources, such as UV-C (UV-LED in the C-band of 100-280 nm), as a means to meet the new needs of their end users. UV-C LEDs provide these manufacturers with the opportunity to miniaturize and low-cost solutions to differentiate between their products and expand market penetration.
Other band UV LED has been widely used in some applications. The use of UV-C LED is limited by LED efficiency, especially in the upper limit of the spectral band.
In many testing and measurement-centric applications in life sciences, UV-C LEDs at the upper limit are very useful. Laboratories are looking for small instruments that cost less than similar large ones to improve productivity and laboratory performance. Emerging technologies are miniaturizing instruments, which not only reduces costs, but also reduces the use of laboratories. Low-cost, small-size LED-based instruments allow researchers to make routine measurements on their workbenches. At the same time, when full-spectrum measurements are needed, researchers can use more expensive full-spectrum ultraviolet lamp instruments at the center of the laboratory, which reduces laboratory bottlenecks and increases productivity.
In the past, instrument manufacturers were hindered by the low performance of UV-C LED in the market. However, with the advent of higher-performance components, manufacturers can address these trends with new instrumentation models using LED capabilities. In this article, we will discuss some applications of UV-C LED.
